Detroit Bankruptcy a “Game-Changing Event,” Meredith Whitney Says - Yahoo! Finance (blog)

It's been just over a week since Detroit filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history and, so far, there are more questions than answers about how this will all shake out. On Wednesday, a U.S. Bankruptcy judge ruled Detroit's Chapter 9 filing can proceed but local unions, pension funds and other creditors will continue to try and stop the process.

Regardless of how the legal proceedings unfold, Meredith Whitney thinks she knows what will happen as a result of Detroit's bankruptcy filing: "staggering aftershocks" for the muni bond market and "important precedents" for other state and local governments.

"We know [Detroit's bankruptcy] is a game-changing event for certain," says Whitney, author of Fate of the States and founder of Meredith Whitney Advisory Group LLC. "It will galvanize other municipalities to either get their act together or follow Detroit's lead."

Asked what other municipalities might follow Detroit's lead into bankruptcy, Whitney cited the five other Michigan cities currently under emergency management: Flint, Pontiac, Ecorse, Allen Park and Benton Harbor. She also reiterated her concerns about the states of New Jersey and Illinois.

The Wall Street Journal recently cited Oakland, Philadelphia and Chicago as other big cities with the potential to follow Detroit's lead but Whitney declined to mention other cities.

"I'm not sure it's constructive to name towns [and] sound the alarm," she said. "But there are numerous others across the country. Detroit is hardly unique."

Of course, Whitney gained increased attention – and considerable criticism – when she sounded the alarm on 60 Minutes in late 2010. At that time, she predicted "a spate of municipal bond defaults. You could see 50 sizeable defaults. Fifty to 100 sizeable defaults. More. This will amount to hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of defaults.”

Nothing close to that level of muni bankruptcies has occurred, to date, but ask yourself: Was Whitney ‘dead wrong’ on 60 Minutes, as her critics continue to claim, or just early?

Kickstarter-funded board game cancelled a year after raising over $100000 - The Verge

“The project is over. The game is cancelled.” With those eight words, Erik Chevalier alerted his 1,246 Kickstarter backers that the board game they collectively funded — The Doom That Came to Atlantic City — will never see the light of day. Thirteen months after rounding up $ 122,874 in contributions, Chevalier has completely pulled the plug on the project, attributing the failure to his own “inexperience in board game publishing,” “ego conflicts,” and unspecified legal and technical challenges. The cancellation is particularly baffling when you consider Chevalier’s Kickstarter overshot its original $ 35,000 target by almost $ 100,000.

What happened? That’s still not entirely clear, and Chevalier isn’t laying out specifics for legal reasons. After a series of missteps, “the money was approaching a point of no return,” he wrote in a recent Kickstarter update. “I’ve spent a large amount of time pitching investors, begging banks for loans and seeking other sources of funding to fix this. Sadly I found no takers.” As you’d imagine, his Kickstarter backers are crying foul, particularly with the idea that their money financed Chevalier’s move to a new city.

“I never set out to con anyone or to perpetrate a fraud but I did walk into a situation that was beyond my abilities and for that I’m deeply sorry.”

“It sounds to me that almost no money went into development but rather your pocket. You quit your job then moved to Portland then lived off our investor money,” wrote one angry financier. Chevalier is also facing heavy criticism over his claim that the project’s goal was the formation of a game company. His Kickstarter page doesn’t back up that notion, and early supporters insist they were funding production of The Doom That Came to Atlantic City and nothing more.

Chevalier’s collaborators on the project are disavowing any knowledge of what went wrong. Speaking for himself and game artist Lee Moyer, designer Keith Baker writes, “Neither one of us received any of the funds raised by the Kickstarter or pre-sales.” Baker claims that he and Lee “were not involved in the decisions that brought about the end of this project.” They plan to offer a print-and-play version of the board game in hopes of providing “misled” backers some consolation. As for refunds, Chevalier has vowed to (eventually) reimburse all 1,246 people that chipped in funds — something Kickstarter’s service terms require when a project’s rewards fail to materialize. Unfortunately it sounds like that will be a lengthy process. As for what ultimately sank The Doom That Came to Atlantic City, Cavalier has promised to write up a thorough post-mortem in the future. But for now it’s just another bump along Kickstarter’s rocky road of hits and misses.

Author Neil Gaiman Announces Debut Game - IGN

Author and screenwriter Neil Gaiman’s wide body of work includes a long list of novels and children's books,  plus a host of comics, screenplays, and teleplays. He's about to add a videogame to his resume.

Wayward Manor is poised to be Gaiman's first game, which he's developing in conjunction with The Odd Gentlemen (The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom).

"For quite a while there's been a story that I've wanted to tell; something inspired by the kinds of films I loved when I was a kid," explains Gaiman in a video published on the game's new website. "Things like Arsenic and Old Lace, Blithe Spirit, The Man Who Came to Dinner."

Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer in the ninth to end the Nationals' losing streak at six games.

Bryce Harper delivered the first game-ending homer of his career, a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth Thursday that lifted host Washington to a 9-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and ended the Nationals' losing streak at six.

Harper drove a hanging slider over the wall just to the left of straightaway center with two outs off Bryan Morris, who also allowed a single to Kurt Suzuki.

Harper raised his right fist overhead as he rounded first base and was mobbed by a bouncing pack of teammates as he reached home plate.

Ian Krol earned the win despite being part of poor relief in the ninth that allowed the Pirates to erase a 7-3 deficit.

CARDINALS 3, PHILLIES 1 Lance Lynn allowed one run in seven innings, and host St. Louis scored three times in the third in a win against Philadelphia.

Matt Carpenter, Jon Jay and Matt Adams drove in runs for the Cardinals, who have won seven of nine.

HUDSON OUT FOR SEASON Tim Hudson is out for the season with a broken right ankle, leaving the Braves without the leader of their pitching staff as they make a push for the pennant.

The team said Hudson would have season-ending surgery in Atlanta. Hudson was injured Wednesday night when Eric Young Jr. of the Mets inadvertently stepped on the back of Hudson's right leg while the pitcher was covering first base.

Atlanta placed Hudson on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and recalled pitcher Alex Wood from Class AAA Gwinnett to start against the Mets. Wood was set to pitch in place of Paul Maholm, who has a bruised left wrist.

BRETT STEPS DOWN George Brett is stepping down as interim hitting coach for the Kansas City Royals. Brett took the job May 30, with the Royals mired in an eight-game losing skid. He said he would do it for a month and wound up doing it for two.

He will return to his job as vice president for baseball operations for the Royals, his role since he retired as a player after the 1993 season.

PHILLIES ALL-STAR TO D.L. The Philadelphia Phillies have put the All-Star outfielder Domonic Brown on the seven-day concussion disabled list.

Brown hit his head on the ground diving for Carlos Beltran's triple in the seventh inning of Tuesday's loss at St. Louis.

Brown underwent a concussion test on Wednesday. He leads the Phillies with 24 homers and 69 runs batted in. He has started 97 games and is hitting .271.

GAME POSTPONED IN BOSTON Thursday's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox was postponed by rain.

The game will be made up on Monday, which had been set to be a day off for both teams, at 6:10 p.m.

The Rays, who trail the Red Sox by half a game in the American League East, will head to New York this weekend to take on the Yankees, and the Red Sox will face the Orioles in Baltimore.

    Neil Gaiman reveals haunting-puzzler 'Wayward Manor,' his first video game - The Verge

    Neil Gaiman has written books, films, graphic novels, and even audio plays, and now he’s stepping into the realm of video games. The acclaimed fantasy author has announced that he’ll be collaborating with two game studios to produce Wayward Manor, a puzzle and adventure game made under his creative control. The title will throw players into the midst of 1920s New England, but they won’t be out enjoying the speakeasies — they’ll be dead, forced to haunt intruders out of their home.

    Gaiman said that the game is inspired by the “crazy, mordant, playful, funny, weird” films that he loved as a kid. The story had apparently been on his mind for some time, but he found that it just didn’t make sense for traditional mediums. “I'm an author, although more specifically than that, I suppose I'm a storyteller,” Gaiman said. “I try and find the right medium to tell the right story in.”

    Wayward Manor will be released on Windows, Mac, and unspecified “tablets” — though the mobile developer attached to the project has exclusively published games for iOS so far. The developers are aiming to release it by December of this year, but they’re putting it up for a Kickstarter-like presale today. The game is being developed no matter how many copies are sold, but different purchase levels are available to entice buyers with some extra perks. The basic game is selling for $ 10, a digital art book and soundtrack will come alongside it for $ 35 more, and beyond that, T-shirts and limited edition posters are available for successively higher sums. Getting customers to drop more money than necessary on an unreleased game would be hard work for most, but Gaiman’s legacy of great fantasy works should be all that Wayward Manor needs.

    While iOS games started out as either simple physics or casual simulation titles when the platform launched about five years ago, the bar has gotten steadily higher and more hard-core. Midcore studios like Kabam started to rise in prominence.

    Now the iOS platform might be seeing is most hardcore title to date — a very, very massive multi-player title from YC- and Menlo Ventures-backed Machine Zone.

    The company, which started out doing text-based RPGs a couple years ago like iMob, is launching Game of War: Fire Age. It's a title where players build and grow empires, train massive armies, forge alliances with other players to win kingdoms.

    The game can handle hundreds of thousands of players concurrently in the same universe, which is not an easy technical feat. Blizzard's World of Warcraft, in contrast, typically handles a few thousand players simultaneously in a single realm. All movement on the game's map is visible to everyone else.

    "We wanted to take the company to the next level and be really ambitious," said Machine Zone CEO Gabriel Leydon. "We decided to build some things that had never been done before. We had the capital to do it and the willpower."

    Leydon didn't hire just typical game designers to build the title. He also found people who had experience in scaling massive systems. The game's user interface is in HTML5 and is rendered natively, allowing the company to handle different screen sizes.

    The other really cool thing about the game's social capabilities is that there is a mechanical turk-like translation system where the players themselves translate chat in exchange for virtual currency rewards. That helps Game of War have really interactive play with a proper critical mass of users who can talk to each other, even if they don't speak the same language. The in-game chat system helps Game of War get manage slang and gamer speak, which a third-party translation system probably wouldn't handle correctly. If say, 50 players translate the same words in the same way, then the game will start using that translation automatically.

    "It's like a highly structured Facebook," Leydon said. "My goal as a game designer was to create a feeling of what it would be to be a king, where you'd have a lot of people under you. You'd have to subjects, wealth and land."

    Assuming say, the game grows to 1 million players, there might only be 20 kings in the game. To reach that level, players have to woo others to form alliances with them. Within those alliances, there are ranks for different officers.

    "This is a very hardcore game. This is not Candy Crush," he said. "This is a complex system with a lot of potential trees of outcomes. If you're the type of person that's fascinated by systems like this, then this is for you."

    Horror-fantasy icon and best-selling author Neil Gaiman is stepping into a whole new world. A virtual one. Today the British-born writer is announcing the launch of his first video game, Wayward Manor.

    Inspired by Gaiman’s love of both supernatural and slapstick genres, the game follows the misadventures of a ghost who wants nothing more than a peaceful afterlife, and to kick out the motley crew living in the house he once called home. A gothic New England estate is the setting, with the storyline running from the 1920 all the way to the not-too-distant future. As the ghost tries harder and harder to get rid of the squatters, he also unravels the mystery of his own death and the after-life.

    “It’s light hearted, its goofy, it’s nice to flip points of view,” says Gaiman, who was tight-lipped with details, but did tell Mashable that films like Arsenic and Old Lace, The Man Who Came To Dinner, and living in atmospheric New England inspired him.

    “I was playing around with an idea essentially about a man and a house over a period of 200 years, thinking how much more fun it would be if the story of this relationship was actually something you could get involved in.”

    After a successful career penning more than 20 books in multiple genres, including the Sandman graphic novels and the novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane, this offering will be the first realized game.

    “Back in the late 1990s I spent a lot of time working with various gaming companies,” he said. “What tended to happen is I put an incredible amount of work in these things and just as something was about to happen, the company was about to go bankrupt.”

    Gaiman says he couldn’t pass up this new chance to work with the independent game studio The Odd Gentleman and Moon Shark, a game publisher co-founded by Creative Artists Agency.

    “I think the biggest surprise is I did it and got involved in it. Nobody would have expected it and I didn’t have the time. It just got fun and I had to make time.”

    As part of the release, Gaiman is also offering fans a pre-sale opportunity that includes limited-edition merch, the chance to name a game character, and even a private dinner with Gaiman.The game will be available this fall, on PC, Mac, and tablets.

    “Normally in a game, if you’re in a haunted house, you are going to be walking through it intrepidly with your flashlight, your bell-book and candle, and your copy of the Necronomicon and you keep going until you find the ghost. In this one all you want to do is be left in peace with your lovely house and be left alone. I don’t want to give anything away but it’s safe to say you were killed in the 1880s and you were killed for a reason.”

    Activision Community Manager: 'Stop Threatening Game Developers' - IGN

    In an interesting and thought-provoking editorial on his personal blog, Activision's community manager Dan Amrich expressed concern about the treatment of game developers on the Internet by the very people who play and enjoy their games, specifically citing a series of recent examples targeting David Vonderhaar of Treyarch.

    In a recent patch of Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops II, a series of tweaks were rolled-out that reduces the damage and speed of certain weapons. Due to the changes, which no doubt will alter the way some folks play the game, Vonderhaar was subject to ridicule and violent threats. The changes made some "people violently angry," according to Amrich.

    As Amrich explains, "One of [Vonderhaar]'s many responsibilities is to keep the game as balanced as possible," yet when he does make these changes, he "often gets told he should die in a fire or kill himself or is a horrible person. If anyone thinks for a second that this is okay, it is not."

    "But if the loudest voices in the Call of Duty 'community' act like an angry mob instead, guess how the entire world views Call of Duty?" Amrich continued. "Now consider that these Internet Tough Guy rants and demands are not unique to COD, but exist everywhere, in many gaming communities. This is why the world often does not take gaming seriously; this is why gamers are assumed to be immature, whiny assh***s. Because the immature, whiny assh***s are louder."

    Amrich concludes with a plea for more thoughtfulness and calm, asking people to think about how they want to be treated. "If you enjoy your games," he ends his blog post, "have a little respect for the people who make them – and stop threatening them with bodily harm every time they do their job."
