Annoying fun: Game Dev Tycoon - 99mac

The year was 1988. The market for games for a variety of platforms such as the Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST and ZX Spectrum in bloom and it was the year that a game with one of history’s wackiest names were released.

game was called Rockstar Ate My Hamster, and the game partly borrowed its name from a headline from a British tabloid rag two years earlier. In the game you are a theater producer who would rather into the music industry and with the help of an inheritance of 50,000 pounds as seed money to get the chance. Man hires musicians, buy securities, finance music videos and in books concerts, all to reach for a dream – to have a gold record for his hard work and get rich in the process. It was a crazy, pretty twisted and really fun game that was so hard that the developer of the game afterwards could not explain how it was done in order to play it to the end.

Fast forward to 2013 and you can apply the same concept to the gaming industry. It’s at least the idea of ??the new game Game Dev tycoon. Developed by two brothers in Australia takes in-game role of one-man developer in his garage in the 80′s who are struggling to build a successful game company. The game was released a few weeks ago and recently received plenty of attention when the developers themselves revealed that they released a slightly modified version of the game for a number of pirate sites.

In the modified version hit man of piracy and how to do so will even companies that go bankrupt. This gave the two brothers, the publicity they needed that game would be discovered by the masses, and for just over SEK 70 one wonders why those who downloaded the pirated version does not either bought the game or downloaded it fully legal demo from the developers website if they now wanted to test it first.

developers behind Game Dev Tycoon thank you who bought the game. A fun grip

Build a gambling empire

Game Dev Tycoon itself has borrowed ideas fairly fresh from the IOS-based game Game Dev Story, which the developers themselves bluntly admits. That in itself is not the “problem” with Game Dev tycoon.

First of all, the graphics are basic to say the least. This does not prevent a Macbook Air with a Core i7 processor and four gigabytes of internal memory to trigger the fans rather immediately, which allows one to wonder if the game is based on Flash. Games model is also time consuming – you can not run the game at a faster or slower speed, which means that you have to GO ON through the same menus, news headlines and other dialog boxes again and again every time you have to start from scratch. This may be done quite often before you get the hang of how the game actually works.

game takes that said its starting point in the mid 80′s when PC and Commodore 64 are the two dominant platforms in this game world. Along the way, introduced and disappears different game consoles and home computers, and it’s a good idea to actually read a bit about how the development was in reality then a lot of it happens in the game based on that reality.

As your game business grows you get the chance to move into larger premises, hire more staff who specialize in such technology, design or both. You can book a booth seats on game shows, buying ads and PR campaigns for your game and constantly develop the game engine you build your game on. As your business grows, you can also develop bigger and bigger games and then you can put different members of your team on the development of different parts of the game based on what they do best. Every now and then you have to train their staff, buy faster computers for them and send them on holiday when they are burned out.

Development from scratch

Each game project passes through three phases, where in each phase must decide how much time you spend on different parts of it. Some things are easier to figure out than others – a sports requires such great graphics, sound and intelligent behavior of the virtual opponents, while it does not require much to the ‘script’ or the history of the game to feel meaningful. A text based adventure game requires neither advanced 3D graphics or lavish sound, while the artificial opponents and the story behind the game requires more time.

This is where you succeed or fail in a game, and it requires both imagination and a lot of luck to succeed in getting the balance right in each individual game projects. There is always some logic to lean on.

Phase two of your development – what is important and what the game can do without?

There are continually developing new game ideas and new technology for the games you want to develop, but it is also important to have succeeded with one or two games in order to afford to spend time developing – your fixed costs ticking on whether you make money for your virtual gaming company or not, and has also hired a couple of people and sit with an expensive office shedding money away quickly if you do not manage to get a couple of real bestseller a year.

only problem is that you can not directly choose which ideas you want to develop – they are instead presented with options which all may be completely meaningless, such as “vampires”, “school” and “time travel”, which probably did not lead to greater success in the gaming market. When forced to choose one of the four, and then to develop another game ideas that hopefully more interesting.

Logical gaps

Does that sound fun? It’s that too. But it is a game that places high demands on being able to figure and test, while accepting that there are variables in the game that are not constant.

If you’re not familiar with how game development works and what is what are the decisions we make about developing a proprietary game engine and the components to be included in the project difficult to base any kind of facts. There is no documentation to speak of. There are now thankfully a wiki which basically acts as an answer key for the game, and without the groping man firmly in the dark. For how does one know that a combination of the subject and the type of games work well together?

a dance game that will serve as a more relaxed game for Playstation Sounds like a given success, but it is in fact a flop. The combination of sports and role-playing games (RPG) is also not a good idea, while the combination of war and action or sci-fi and simulation can sell well. Hiring more staff think they should raise the quality of the games even virtual companies produce, but in fact it may have exactly the opposite effect regardless of how skilled personnel taking into the company. The game let me hire a famous designer, but the four games company could develop flopped before ten million in capital was gone and the company was put into liquidation.

There are some other problems with the game. For example, let me develop a karate game that got 10/10 ratings in the four games magazines that constantly rate the games, will be released. High grades are most helpful to your game to be successful, even if it is not a guarantee of success. The game sold like hotcakes, and drew in eight million to the account which was substantial money for a one-man operation in a garage.

Reviewers wrote that they “could not wait for a sequel”, which I then quickly let develop. This resulted in disastrous ratings, lousy sales and comments in other media to my game company had released the same type of game just too close to the first game. From the customers got comments about my game companies tried to exploit customers.

Another logical gap, for example, to be able to easily develop games for Nintendo’s first successful console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) without having built a game engine that supports a gamepad, then hand controller for the NES. That you can let develop a game with 3D graphics and stereo sound to Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld video game is also a little strange.

same is true of other things such as support for multiple players or the opportunity to edit their tracks – if you do not know that a particular platform supports it, it is wasted money on development. The game gives you no warning to either one or the other.

Frustrating like reality

High marks from the media and mass marketing is itself not a guaranteed path to success – a game for the most popular platform on the market basically got the highest rating of all gaming magazines in the game was backed by a marketing campaign that took over half of my games business capital of the claim and the game had before it was released reached a level of hype (this is a value that shows how much interest there is a game before it is released) that I have not achieved with any other game. The game sold not even enough to cover development costs.

Media has spoken. No wow it seems.

While this illustrates the way it is in reality to gaming companies. It is the customers who decide if a game is a success, not gaming magazines or how big advertising budget you have to play with.

Is the Game Dev Tycoon is a great game? The graphics are not impressive, the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, and the logical gaps in places really annoying.

A not completely straight comparison can be made with Battlefield 3, which I played through from start to finish and has not played since. It is not at all the same kind of game, but the graphics are incredibly elaborate and it was indeed a great new game. Game Dev Tycoon has none of those characteristics, but despite this I find it hard to stop playing it – and perhaps that is the secret of a good game: you can not let it go.
