Star Trek is a phenomenon in science fiction. The original series from the 1960s is a legendary part of television history and has given life to several subsequent series, lots of movies, toys and games. Gene Roddenberry’s universe has almost become a religion for millions of people worldwide and is the only brand of sci-fi that even comes close to challenging the Star Wars in sheer popularity.
gaming front, Star Trek, however, not been quite as successful. Through the years we have received a number of games based on the various incarnations of Star Trek. The best game in my opinion is Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force , a first person shooter that really caught the feeling and atmosphere of the series Voyager. The remaining trials have in my experience been mediocre at best.
In 2009 we got a new start on Star Trek, with JJ Abrams film, which showed that Star Trek is not just for the best-informed geeks and that it could actually be cool with tights in different colors and small laser guns. The film’s success did Chris Pine to movie star and Zachary Quinto, previously best known as Sylar in the TV series Heroes, took on the role of Spock.
sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness will premiere this spring and in this context, we take note of the game Star Trek, where all the actors from the new films reprise their roles and where we as players can take control of both Captain Kirk and Spock. After spending several hours with this title, I wish, however, that Spock could do their numbing nerve grip on me so I do not suffer more.

storyline of Star Trek: The Video Game is set between the last two films and tells the story of how the crew of the USS Enterprise encounters the alien race Gorn for the first time. Hardcore Trek fans probably remember Gorn-breed from the classic section “Arena” where Kirk fights the creature in what has been described as the ultimate worst fight scene.
Gorn-lizards have been redesigned from people in rubber suits to slimy lizards, screaming and running around with guns at the ready. It is of course up to Kirk and Spock to load the guns and rid the galaxy of this scum. This is in the form of a cooperative third-person shooter.
It all looks initially quite promising. Character models actually look like the actors they are based on and cast manage to capture their personalities. But as soon as we get to see the facial animations fall illusion, as these are horrid. More problems down quickly on the queue is already on the game’s first level where I run around the Enterprise as Kirk. Characters are hollow and can run straight through, enemies disappear into walls or standing right in front of me without noticing that I’m there.
