Modern video games are incredibly complicated bits of programming. There are high-resolution textures to render, physics engines to operate, and all those huge 3D environments. Game designers can only do so much to make sure everything works as it is supposed to, so when you have thousands (or millions) of gamers putting in hour after hour with a game, they're sure to encounter some bugs that made it past testing. A lot of them are pretty funny too. Let's check out 10 of the best in GIF form.
Click the gallery to see each on of the glitches and then check out the full explanations of each animations below… without your browser being weighed down by all those hefty GIFs!
Liberty City police always get their man
This is one of the more common quirks of GTA IV, although an extreme example of it. When you're busted by the cops in this game, that's it — game over. It doesn't matter what happens after the screen grays out. Even if all hell breaks loose and your car gets upended, the arrest animation will continue playing, which is what happened here.
An Imperial Legion of soldiers always maintains eye contact
The Elder Scrolls games sometimes get a little confused with spatial relationships. Here a soldier is infinitely rotating his torso, but because the player is engaged in dialog, the soldier doesn't break eye contact. It's a little creepy.
Still more evidence professional wrestling is fake
Sometimes it's not the mistake that makes a game look weird, it's the way it is corrected. Something went wrong with the physics governing limbs in WWE 13 when this referee was in the shot. The game sort of dislocates his shoulder and swings it backward to get things in the right orientation. Consider this more evidence that professional wrestling is not real.
Helicopter bus
Just Cause 2 is an incredibly fun game largely because it has only a casual relationship with real physics. Where else can you dive off a cliff and use a grappling hook to latch onto a plane, then get in and fly it away? So sometimes a bus falls off a cliff, then leaps into the air before exploding. It's the price we pay for awesome things.
The ultimate insult
QWOP is a game where you control a runner's movement with just four buttons. It can feel like one giant glitch the first time you play it, but it's simultaneously infuriating and engaging. The 5 meter record in this GIF is a good run in QWOP, but as the player in this GIF finds out, sometimes you just can't win (literally). The runner just tumbles off the screen after making the goal.
Car-nado
Earlier GTA titles had a more rudimentary physics engine than the last two games. In this snippet from GTA: San Andreas, the player made the mistake of placing two cars in a two-car garage. One of them was probably on fire, which confused the game terribly when it exploded.
Follow us
Playing a game with computer-controlled allies can sometimes lead to strange occurrences like this one. The AI units run through the door first, leaving the human player unable to follow. Then one soldier clips back through and kicks the door open. That probably should have happened the other way around.
He's in the wall
Clipping has always been odd in GTA titles. The collision detection only seems good enough to make sure you (usually) don't get stuck in walls. Hands and weapons can poke through thin barriers, though. The upshot of that is the stealth bat attack seen above. This is obviously staged, but that's actually how the game engine works.
He needs help — really
Torvar has a problem, as indicated by the dialog. He also has a problem as indicated by his grotesquely twisted limbs and a pelvis that has fused with the ground. Skyrim's collision detection has taken a holiday in this GIF.
Can you smell what the 2D Rock is cookin'?
In this cutscene from WWE 13, the game seems to have lost a dimension. There are only three to start with, so it shouldn't be hard to keep track of them. The only place The Rock's depth indicators are working are the eyes and mouth, which only serves to make this even weirder.

-
The ultimate insult
Contrary to appearances, QWOP is one of the hardest games ever created by man. Even when you do figure it out, a convenient glitch spoils your fun.
-
Car-nado
You have to be careful not to place cars too close together in GTA games. Otherwise they can spontaneously become an unstoppable cyclone of twisted steel and fire.
