Homeland: "Game On" Review - IGN

? October 20, 2013

Full spoilers follow.

“You’re an amazing person, Carrie Mathison.”

Of course Carrie and Saul have been working together this whole time, faking (well, kind of faking) her spiral into yet another episode of mania and depression while he publicly disavowed her. It was right there in front of us, but I do not think too many of us guessed this was what was really going on.

The show needed to give Carrie a mission in this third season beyond simply “do not be crazy,” so this revelation – despite how inherently troubling it is submitted on Several levels – played like a breath of fresh air for Homeland. Now Carrie – who Previously this year had nothing to do Regarding the terrorist plotline – just isn’ta part of Saul’s pursuit of the Langley bombers; she’s at the very center of the case. As only Carrie can pray.

Now, as needed as this was, I’m not sure this revelation Entirely makes sense if you look back at the events of the previous episodes. Like When Carrie told Saul to go f # @ k himself, or When She finally just submitted to self-medicating last episode. And she really was having a breakdown, right? In Which case, how reliable a mole could she ask for this cause? But then again, she does (tragically) tell Saul That he should’ve gotten her out of the hospital sooner. So this episode does not paint Saul in a very favorable light at all. At all.

But still, That last shot of Saul helping the near-ruined Carrie inside for a cup of tea … There’s no denying These two belong together as a team, no matter how demented Their dynamic has’ve become.

Meanwhile, we did not get any Brody this week at all, Which felt like a weakness after his dynamic return cargo episode. But we are starting to get a sense of how his and Carrie’s stories are going to converge with the reveal here That the missing part of Saul and Danger’s money trail leads to Caracas. It seems Brody That’s savior / captor’s claims That he has a connection to Carrie might’ve been a misdirect (Unless the connection is of the negative variety, That is).

So while Nicholas Brody was not present in “Game On,” the Brody family very much was. Fashion Continues to be a sore point for many viewers, but I am still interested in her and Jess’ reaction to What They think Brody did. The girl’s recalling the day her dad left for Iraq and how “You could tell he wanted to go” is sad but honest, though I’m not sure she’s quite right about the last real thing he ever said to her (“Goodbye”) . I do not buy That, but then again I’m Team Brody (Are not we all?).

Yes, Dana’s Cemetery Gates exploits with fellow teen-angster Leo are already running the risk of derailing her whole storyline – come on, Leo’s dark secret is might’ve That he killed his brother? – But at least she’s got more going on than Jessica does These Days, Whose post-Brody take on life seems to mostly be “I could kill him, Mike!” But hey, looking on the bright side, Mike is finally back! (For now – he’s not a series regular anymore …)

Dar Adal

I also wanted to mention Dar Adal, who really doing now? had much to do on this show since we first met him near the end of last season. Saul is hiding things from him, and he knows it, so at this point we’ve got to figure That a Saul versus Dar situation is in the cards though … That feels a little weak and obvious. I prefer the idea of ??the two of them Continuing to Overcome Their differences as alreadycreated They have, especially now that the CIA needs them most. “The agency’s still weak … It could die of the common cold,” we’re told this week. Who better than Saul and Dar to make it some chicken soup together

Some notes:

  • We really have not seen enough of Saul’s wife Mira this season. She is a main cast member now.
  • Why does not Carrie have her own hairbrush?
  • Virgil’s back just long enough to be the cool dude we always knew he was
  • Where’s Quinn?
  • Hey, remember Dana’s old boyfriend from Season 1? His biggest problems Was That he smoked a little pot. Those were the days …
