– A big compliment, says HBO’s program director.
Yesterday was the first episode in the third season of the hit television series Game of Thrones on HBO’s flow provided services outside the U.S., a few hours after it was shown in the country. It certainly was a few hours too long to wait for many, and the episode has shattered the previous record for the greatest BitTorrent swarm.
TorrentFreak writes that at most included more than 163 000 users in the swarm, which shared the episode between them. In less than a day, it was downloaded over one million times, but it worries actually HBO, which is behind the series, to any significant extent.
– A kind of compliment
A while back we wrote about that Game of Thrones director-think Piracy is part of the reason why the series alive today. His opinion was that more viewers, even those who do not pay for themselves, creating more publicity about the series – and thus allows more also will pay HBO to see it. There is a perception he is not alone.
– I should certainly not say this, but it’s a kind of compliment, says HBO’s program director Michael Lombardo to EW.com.
– The demand is there, and it has certainly not had any negative impact on DVD sales. Piracy is something that comes natural to have a very successful game series on a payment service, says Lombardo.
Several of the actors in the series have also spoken out about piracy, and certain shares this view. Although they admit that they look at it as a compliment, more still concerned that the sheer amount pirates might result in budget cuts over time, according to Forbes.
Hope the quality is good
Game of Thrones is so popular that despite piracy is, according to EW, the single series HBO serve the best, in terms of international distribution and DVD sales. One of the program director’s real problems of piracy is also about the quality of the series.
– One of my concerns about the copies that people will see. The production value of the series is amazing, so I hope that the quality stays in the tilsnuskede versions, says Lombardo to the site.
Although this is a slightly different approach than many other companies in the industry, also allows HBO to affect the negative impact of piracy. Lombardo also said the company especially trying to put an end to systematic copying, and those who profit from selling pirated copies of the series.
Many pirates nordic
feedback that many copies the series because it comes too late for their country, priority HBO to get sent out yesterday’s episode internationally as soon as possible after the premiere in the United States. This should be part of a plan to combat piracy in 2013.
– We think the key to countering piracy is to make the content as Game of Thrones available worldwide, within the shortest possible time … to 176 territories within a week after the premiere in the U.S., said Chief Jeff Cusson according to Forbes.
Piracy figures for the season premiere suggests that it may not have been an unqualified success. Most pirates are well enough U.S., but this can be enough because HBO is not available as flow service in the United States. Where available it only costly cable version, which means that even paying customers either have to take up the episode or sit down when it is sent.
It is also not far down from the number of pirates in the U.S. to everyone in the UK and Australia, and the numbers from TorrentFreak shows that Norwegian and Swedish pirates standings would ended up in fifth place – ahead of both France, Spain and the Netherlands.
