“Game of thrones” highs for the second consecutive year Torrent Freaks annual list of the most downloaded TV series. The section dealing with the season finale “Mhysa” and not, perhaps a little surprising, that more publicized “The Rains of Castamere”. But whether illegal downloading is good or bad for the series – where there are divided opinions.
Torrent Freaks estimates claim that “Mhysa” was downloaded 5.9 million times, which is more than “Breaking Bad” (4.2 million) and “The Walking Dead” (3.6 million).
But it is not that the interesting figures from TorrentFreak. When “Mhysa” aired in the U.S., according to Entertainment Weekly 5.4 million viewers watched the episode, which is thus less than the total download figure. Admittedly, it is difficult to compare them, then watching the figure is from a single time, while Torrent Freaks figure extends from the time the episode aired in early June to the list was compiled at the end of the year. But worth noting is that the majority of the downloads took place during the week after the “Mhysa” aired.
“Game of thrones” are together “Homeland” and “Dexter” are the only series of the top ten on Torrent Freaks list where the download number is higher than the ratings in the U.S. when the sections were sent.
In February, noted David Petrarca – who directed two episodes in season two of “Game of thrones” – that illegal downloading is good for a series that “GoT” then it creates “cultural buzz.” Jeff Bewkes, senior manager at Time Warner owns HBO, expressed the same thoughts last summer when he said that the illegal download of “Game of Thrones” is “better than winning an Emmy” because it means that more people ordering channel package. Even Vince Gilligan has highlighted to download strengthened the brand “Breaking Bad” series, which he created and was the showrunner for, but he said at the same time that it is also a problem for the industry.
Earlier this month, however, voiced Gale Anne Hurd, executive producer of “The Walking Dead”, his concern over illegal downloading. For Variety.com she said:
– There is a misconception in the industry that piracy is a good thing, that viewers will develop the habit of paying for the series as they are downloading. I’m not sure that the industry understands other than the simplified explanations are that viewership increases if a series is downloaded much.
The ten most downloaded sections during the year, according to TorrentFreak from “Game of Thrones (5.9 million downloads),” Breaking Bad “(4.2 million), The Walking Dead” (3.6 million), “The Big Bang Theory “(3.4 million),” Dexter “(3.1 million),” How I met your mother “(3 million),” Suits “(2.6 million),” Homeland “(2.4 million), “Vikings” (2.3 million) and finally the “Arrow” (2.2 million). The figures are based on files shared via BitTorrent.
